Hon. Myra Freeman

Former Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia

The Honourable Myra A. Freeman, CM, ONS, MSM, the former Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia (2000-2006), is a member of the Order of Canada, the first Chancellor and member of the Order of Nova Scotia, the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals. A graduate of Dalhousie University, and former teacher with the Halifax Regional School Board, Mrs. Freeman is the recipient of six Honorary Doctorate Degrees, The Public Policy Forum f Canada’s Achievement Award, Rotary International’s Paul Harris Fellows Award, and the Canadian Israel Research Foundation’s Woman of Action Humanitarian Award. She is recognized by Mount Saint Vincent University as an Inspiring Woman and by the Richard Ivy School of Business and WXN as a Trailblazer and one of Canada's 100 Outstanding Women. Appointed by the Government of Canada in 2003, she continues to serve as Honorary Captain(Navy) to Maritime Forces Atlantic, Co-Chair of the Community Leadership Advisory Council to the Admiral for Maritime Forces Atlantic, National Council Chair of the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust, and Director of the Canadian Forces Liason Council. Mrs. Freeman is a national Director of Historica Canada, The Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Save the Children Canada, the International Women’s Forum of Canada, the Canadian Friends of the Israel Museum, the Advisory Board of the Coady International Institute and a former Director of the RCMP Foundation.  Regionally, she serves as  Director of the Telus Atlantic Community Board, the Frank H. Sobey Awards for Excellence in Business Studies, Mount Saint Vincent University’s Board of Governors and Advisor to the Legacy Committee of the 2011 Halifax Canada Games.  Recently, she was appointed as Chair of the Minister’s Panel on Education to review the Public School system in Nova Scotia. She is married to Lawrence Freeman, QC, a partner in McInnes Cooper, and is the proud mother of three children and two grandchildren.
